Re-engagement, Loyalty & Referral WhatsApp Templates

Re-engagement, loyalty and referral templates help you keep the customers you already have: win-back check-ins and offers for lapsed buyers, points-expiry reminders and tier upgrades for members, and referral invites for happy customers. All are Marketing templates, so send them only with marketing consent.

Re-engagement & win-back

Re-engagement & win-back WhatsApp templates

Re-engagement templates win back customers who haven’t bought or replied in a while, with a friendly check-in or a time-limited offer. Both are Marketing templates. Send them only to contacts who still have marketing consent, and stop after one or two attempts if there is no response.

A well-timed message can bring a lapsed customer back, while a careless one gets you blocked. These templates either offer a reason to return or simply ask whether the customer wants to hear what’s new.

Tip: Only send to contacts who opted in to promotions; lapsed customers who never opted in are the most likely to block you.

Tip: Retarget "Maybe later" replies in a month instead of immediately; persistence without a pause hurts your quality rating.

When to send re-engagement & win-back messages

  • Check-in: after one to two missed buying cycles (for example 60 days for monthly purchases, 9 to 12 months for annual services).
  • Offer: a week after the check-in, only to people who read it but didn’t reply.
  • Mid-week, mid-morning sends tend to work well for win-backs; the frequency guard keeps these from landing on top of other campaigns.

Re-engagement & win-back best practices

  1. Only message lapsed customers who opted in to WhatsApp marketing; people who never opted in are the most likely to report you.

  2. Try a conversational check-in before a discount, and save the offer for those who reply.

  3. Respect “Maybe later”: wait a month before trying again, and stop entirely after a STOP reply.

  4. Ask why they left with quick replies (price, quality, no longer needed) and use the answers before discounting.

  5. Remove contacts who ignore two win-back messages from future marketing to protect your quality rating.

What if a win-back message gets blocks?

Pause the campaign, check your audience and wording, and send to a smaller, more recent segment next time. Blocks and reports lower your number’s quality rating.

Loyalty & referrals

Loyalty & referrals WhatsApp templates

Loyalty and referral templates remind members about points before they expire, celebrate tier upgrades and invite customers to refer friends. All three are Marketing templates in this library. They work best when the reward is concrete and personal: the member’s own points balance, tier name or referral link.

Loyalty members are your most engaged audience. Remind them about points before they expire, celebrate tier upgrades the moment they happen and invite them to refer friends.

Tip: Because it nudges a purchase, a points reminder is Marketing; a plain balance statement without a call to redeem may qualify as Utility.

Tip: Send to customers who rated you highly in a feedback broadcast; happy customers refer far more often.

When to send loyalty & referrals messages

  • Points reminder: 30 days and 7 days before points expire.
  • Tier upgrade: on the day the customer qualifies, while the purchase is fresh.
  • Referral invite: a few days after a positive review or repeat purchase, on a weekday afternoon.

Loyalty & referrals best practices

  1. Trigger tier-upgrade messages right when the milestone happens; celebration is more effective than a monthly summary.

  2. Send points-expiry reminders about two weeks before expiry, with the value in currency, not just points.

  3. Invite customers who gave you a high rating to refer a friend; they are the most likely to do it.

  4. Personalize with variables (points, value, expiry date) instead of generic program news.

  5. Make sure your referral terms are on a public page and link to them from the template.

More loyalty & referrals questions

Can I personalize the referral link for each customer?

Yes. Make the link or referral code a variable and fill it per contact from your contact fields when you send the broadcast.

Can a points balance message be a Utility template?

A plain balance or expiry notice for an existing member can sometimes qualify, but anything that encourages a purchase is Marketing. Meta decides the category when it reviews the template.

How do I give each customer their own referral link?

Store each customer’s referral link or code on the contact and insert it with a body variable, so every recipient sees their own.

Re-engagement, Loyalty & Referral WhatsApp template FAQs

Practical answers about Retention messages on WhatsApp.

How long should I wait before a win-back message?
It depends on your purchase cycle. A common rule is to send when a customer has gone about twice their usual time between purchases without buying.
Do win-back messages hurt my WhatsApp quality rating?
They can if they go to unengaged contacts. Keep the audience small and relevant, include an opt-out, and watch the report for blocks and opt-outs.
Who counts as an inactive customer?
Someone who has missed one or two of their normal purchase or visit cycles. Use your own order data to build that list, then import it into Social Intents as an audience.
Is a loyalty points message Marketing or Utility?
If it encourages a purchase (“redeem now”), it is Marketing. A plain statement of a points balance or account change, with no call to buy, may qualify as Utility.
Will Retention WhatsApp messages reach US customers?
No. Win-back, loyalty and referral messages are Marketing templates, which Meta has paused for US (+1) numbers. Reach opted-in US customers by SMS fallback, and reply with free-form messages when a US customer messages you first. Read the US guide.
